A Truly Talented and Sexy DP...did I say sexy? Yes I did.
I am so thrilled that we are off and running with our first film festival at Dances with Films. So far it has been quite exciting and need I say, slightly exhausting, but when you are blessed to be doing that which you love who needs sleep.
I still have a few people to share that have made this vision a reality and without them "Waiting for You" would still be a day dream in my mind. Joost van Starrenburg, my Director of Photography, is really the first to be thanked because he was the catalyst for the whole journey. He was my angel that pushed me off the edge so I could take my first flight.
I met Joost on the soccer field...no I don't play our sons do...and they happened to be on the same team a few years back. I was on the sidelines reading a book about cinematography when he sauntered over...did I say saunter...yes he saunters...and asked what I was up to. That moment started many a conversations about the beauty of light and color, our favorite films, art and a small story that I had written. It didn't take long to realize that we were weaved from the same cloth and soon we were sharing all kinds of content that we should see if we hadn't already. When Joost read the script and said "So when are we going to shoot it?" It was done. I was inspired. I was making my first film. I felt honored and l sightly terrified that he was on board, but I knew we would hold each other to our own standards and that was exciting.
Joost has an eye for beauty and a perfect balance of the yin and yang that is needed in the world. As a woman director I was worried about being over dominated in such a masculine heavy industry, but I was lucky that shooting "Waiting for You" with Joost was like a waltz rather than a war.
A DP is so important to a directors vision; they are the eyes that allow the world to see what is floating around in your head. So it goes without saying how important it is that they have an understanding of your style. Its an amazing relationship of trust and collaboration.
Talent, beauty and sex appeal what more could a director want in her DP. Don't believe come see our short Waiting for You. Or check out his work.
